Presidents Letter 2021

January 2021

2020 presented the Patrons with a most challenging year as all of our planned events had to be cancelled due to the Covid virus. Starting with our ‘annual Members only’ Getty Villa tour luncheon with Dr. Sara Cole on the ‘Assyria & Mesopotamia’ exhibition. We also experienced delays in receiving Casola Prize applications and our High School grant programs, which resulted in minor delays in the award of two Casola Prizes and six H.S. grants. A proposed Christmas ‘post award’ Casola Prize luncheon had to be also cancelled.

Our annual fall Santa Monica collaborative lecture and luncheon, which was to feature past Casola winner Joseph Tumolo, [UCLA] Ph.C., was also sadly cancelled. The Patrons are hoping to re-instate many of these events as soon as circumstances allow.

We await further notification by the Getty Villa on their re-opening and possible exhibitions for late spring - early summer for our ‘Members only’ visit.. Applications for the 2021 Casola Prize will be posted to the PIC website in early February. Applications for our High School Senior’s grants will also be posted to the website at the same time. The Patrons hope to reinstate the awarding of our Casola Prize at an annual Ferragosto in August. Mr. Tumolo has agreed to present his postponed John Fante lecture in the fall at Santa Monica college and we await input from the college on this fall event. In addition, the Patrons are discussing a special presentation by Dr. Thomas Harrison, UCLA Italian Chair emeritus, of the acclaimed film, "La Strada" for 2021.

Please visit the PIC website - ‘picla.org’ for upcoming events, view recent photos and to communicate with us.

As we start the New Year you will see our membership form has been updated to reflect a small increase in annual dues, which have remained the same for almost 30 years. The increase is due to the establishment and maintenance of the PIC website, the services of a CPA for filing needed tax documents and increased costs of postage and operations. We remind you of the many benefits of joining our exciting Italian organization, or renewing your membership.

The benefits of membership are many, with free VIP events, preferred parking and exclusive invitations to select events. We urge you to share this opportunity with relatives and friends who share our passion for the Italian Culture. Please use the enclosed or the website’s printed form and mail to the PIC with your membership dues. Annual dues are the ‘life blood’ of this organization in its effort to promote the Italian Culture. The P.I.C. is a 60+ year old, non-profit 501c-3 Corporation and your contributions are fully tax-deductible.
