Mr. Angelo Spano received the 2021 Casola Prize while a student at UCLA in the Italian Studies department. His dream is to be involved in the film profession. This is his first published poem.
It was written
It was written when the scribes tuned their ink
to the melody of nature and every blessing
fell from the clouds of white foam -
rain and dust and solitude and destiny.
It was fleshed as the bamboo tree was shaped
into chopsticks to feed the mouths of children
with dreams of some distant understanding of fate.
It was spoken when Jesus walked amongst the
crowds and separate glances met.
It was burned in the tempered glass stained windows
and in the spotted fur of the leopard and in the lining
of the wood.
And so
it is -
love.
